The Oral-Systemic Connection, 2021. Often dental hygiene is thought of as being as simple as keeping your teeth clean. Most people don’t know how it is so much more important than that. There has been evidence showing an important link between oral health and systemic health. Both affecting each other. (Kapila, 2021). Periodontal disease occurs when bacteria infects the surrounding tissues of teeth eventually causing recession of the gums and surrounding bone. (CDC, 2013). Hi Eda,
ReplyDeleteThis is a very informative vlog post about the importance of maintaining the longevity of dentures as well as eliminating the risk of periodontal diseases related to denture wear. The ODHA (2016) also emphasizes the importance of recare visits with a Dental Hygienist to ensure optimal oral health for clients on a regular basis. During these visits, Dental Hygienists look for the proper fit of the partial or full denture by checking that the denture is not loose due to bone shrinkage, assessing for areas of irritation and/or pain, and signs of wear on the denture. If these are detected during the assessment the Dental Hygienist can then refer the client to a denturist or dentist to address the changes as soon as possible reducing the chances of further trauma to the surrounding tissues (ODHA, 2016).

Hi Jada,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this insightful comment on denture care and how the dental hygienist can be a big part of oral health when it comes to dentures. You're absolutely correct as mentioned in my vlog a denturist and dental hygienist should be visited routinely to help maintain a great oral health status. I also enjoyed reading some of the signs that a dental hygienist may be looking for in order to determine if the dentures are fitting properly and if there are any underlying conditions.
